The South West Laparoscopic Consortium aims to provide high quality laparoscopic colorectal surgery training for consultant surgeons in the region and beyond. Our multi-faceted approach supports formal training, self-directed learning, performance assessment and clinical mentoring in a way that is easily accessible to preceptees.


The training programme

Our group combines experienced preceptors, proven enhanced recovery team training and innovative surgical and cadaveric skills laboratories. The stages of our programme include:

The faculty will support entry at different levels, dependent upon existing experience. In addition, the programme has flexibility to suit the variation in availability and geographical locations of each consultant training with us.


The faculty

Mr Nader Francis MBChB FRCS PhD

SWLC Lead Surgeon, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Honorary Senior Lecturer, University of Bristol

Mr Francis trained at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, completing a PhD on laparoscopic surgical assessment methods with Sir Alfred Cuschieri. After a fellowship in Barcelona, under Dr A Lacy, he took up his post in Yeovil. In addition to his research interests in objective assessment methods for surgery he also co-ordinates the programme for 3rd year medical students (from Bristol) and delivers courses in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced recovery.

 

Mr Mark G Coleman MBChB FRCS FRCS (Gen Surg) MD
Lead Surgeon for the National Training Programme, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

 

An experienced laparoscopic colorectal surgeon and preceptor, Mr Coleman led the development of the South West Laparoscopic Colorectal training group and, in 2008, was appointed as the Clinical Lead for the Department of Health’s national training programme.  He also convenes a number of courses in Plymouth as the RLS skills tutor.  He has trained a number of surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal surgery in the South West and beyond.




Mr Tony Dixon MBChB FRCS

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, North Bristol NHS Trust.

With an extensive experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, Mr Dixon is a very active preceptor and has supervised the training of consultant colleagues in the South West, West Midlands, Merseyside and North West. In addition to hosting biannual Laparoscopic Colorectal Master-classes Tony also offers a highly popular 6 month laparoscopic fellowship for post CCT trainees and newly appointed consultants. Tony also hosts master-classes in other aspects of advanced laparoscopic surgery and has developed a web based information service for patients and medical personnel.

 

 

Mr Rob Longman MBChB FRCS

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

 After a laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at St Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton, Canada, Mr Longman formally developed the laparoscopic colorectal service at UBHT within 9 months of taking up post. In addition to mentoring a consultant colleague in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, he is also a RCSEng tutor on the Basic Surgical Skills Course and teaches at the European Surgical Institute in Hamburg.
 

Dr Fiona Carter BSc(Hons) PhD CertTHE

Course Development Manager, Yeovil Academy, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Project Manager, SWLC.

After 14 years experience designing and delivering laparoscopic surgical training courses in the Cuschieri Skills Centre (Dundee), Dr Carter is now developing medical training events in Yeovil. Her research interests in assessment of surgical performance and virtual reality together with her background in medical education support the new role of coordinating the educational aspects of the SWLC.
