
Course Summary: Aspects of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery for Theatre Practitioners
Audience: Healthcare professionals (Nurses, HCA and ODP) who work in laparoscopic colorectal theatre teams or who are about to commence practice in this area.
Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course each delegate should:
Have a greater knowledge of the clinically applied anatomy and steps for laparoscopic operations for colonic resection
Understand the expectations from surgeons of the role of theatre practitioner and scrub nurse in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
Be competent in patient positioning techniques for laparoscopic colorectal surgery
Be able to discuss the anaesthetics considerations for laparoscopic surgery and enhanced recovery
Have an increased understanding of the ergonomics of laparoscopic equipment
Be able to discuss the various types of instrumentation used in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
Be aware of the legal aspects of assisting during laparoscopic surgery and understand the need for specialised training for this extended role
Have improved knowledge of safe use of laparoscopic electrosurgery and new energised dissection methods
Be able to describe the key elements of an enhanced recovery programme
Be able to demonstrate assembly and usage of common laparoscopic stapling devices

Practical hands-on sessions covering: Ergonomics and equipment positioning ; Laparoscopic camera orientation and assisting; Simple laparoscopic manipulation and dissection tasks; Use of energised dissection technology; Laparoscopic stapling devices
Short seminars on: Anatomy for right and left colonic resection; surgeon's perspective of theatre practitioner's role; anaesthetic considerations for laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced recovery; instrumentation for laparoscopic colorectal surgery; safe laparoscopic electrosurgery; assisting in laparoscopic surgery; brief overview of enhanced recovery
